Memphis Man Sentenced to 320 Months for an Attempted Business Robbery and Shooting

MEMPHIS, TN—Marcus Dean, age 29, of Memphis, Tennessee was sentenced today to 320 months in federal prison for robbery, Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1951; use of a firearm during the commission of an attempted robbery, Title 18, U.S.C., Section 924(c); and felon in possession of a firearm, Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g) announced United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, Edward L. Stanton, III.

On July 21, 2010, officers with the Memphis Police Department assigned to the Safe Streets Task Force responded to the scene of an attempted robbery at the American Inn Motel located in Memphis. The clerk of the motel, who was 18 years old, was shot in the back during the incident. The defendant, Marcus Dean, entered the motel with his face covered and demanded money from the victim. When the victim tried to flee, the defendant shot him in the back. After shooting the victim, Dean fled the scene with no money. Dean was identified as a suspect when the police received a Crime Stoppers tip from a person who overheard Dean bragging about the shooting. After his arrest, Dean gave a statement of admission to the attempted robbery and shooting.

This case was investigated by the Safe Streets Task Force which is comprised of investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Memphis Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Bartlett Police Department, and Germantown Police Department.
