Brownsville, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge seized approximately 111.8 pounds of marijuana Sunday evening. The estimated street value of the marijuana is $89,489.
On Aug. 7, CBP officers seized a compressed bulk of alleged marijuana hidden inside a non-factory compartment within the vehicle's gas tank. The Jeep was also seized by CBP.
On Aug. 7, 2011, CBP officers working at the B & M International Bridge came in contact with a northbound 1994 Jeep Cherokee. The male driver was identified as a 23-year-old U.S. citizen from Dallas, Texas. A CBP officer referred the Jeep Cherokee and driver to secondary for further inspection. In secondary, officers seized one compressed bulk amount of alleged marijuana that was discovered inside a non-factory compartment located within the vehicle’s gas tank. The Jeep was also seized by CBP.
The male traveler was transferred to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement –Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) for further investigation.
Michael T. Freeman, CBP Port Director, Brownsville said, “I commend our frontline officers for their work in interdicting this significant amount of marijuana that was found inside a non-factory compartment.” Freeman further said, “This is an example of the great enforcement work our officers are doing to secure our nation’s borders and to prevent dangerous drugs from entering our country.”
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
