U. S. Customs and Border Protection Finds More Than One Hundred Pounds of Cocaine in a Refrigerated Container
Port of Newark, N.Y. – Trying to smuggle drugs in and out of the country is never “cool” and this latest seizure by U. S. Customs and Border Protection reaffirms that fact.
On July 24, CBP Seaport Operations Team at the Newark/New York Seaport and ICE Homeland Security Investigations agents with the Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST) conducted an examination of a ship originating from Ecuador that was ultimately destined for Belgium. During this examination of approximately 90 refrigerated containers the CBP Officers discovered that one of the refrigerated containers contained something other than frozen foods.
“The CBP Officers assigned to the Newark/New York Seaport Operations Team takes their responsibility very seriously in disrupting the flow of illicit narcotics to the United States”, said New York Field Operations Director, Robert E. Perez “This is just the latest example of CBP Officers demonstrating our Core Values of Vigilance, Integrity and Service to Country.”
When the CBP Seaport Operations Team came upon this particular refrigerated container they found something more than ice cream or frozen peas. What they found was 44 brick shaped packages. A CBP K-9 Team provided a positive response that these packages contained narcotics. A field test confirmed what the K-9 had already sniffed out. The 44 packages tested positive for cocaine totaling approximately 101 lbs with an approximate street value of more than $2.2 million.
