February 12, 2010 - NEWARK, NJ—Kevin Cruise, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Newark Division announced the arrest of Nathaniel A. Brown, age 28, on a Federal warrant charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution from the state of Missouri where he faces state murder charges. The arrest, made by the FBI's South Jersey Violent Incident /Gang Task Force, occurred this morning without incident.
On October 13, 2009, Brown was charged by the Kansas City Police Department with murder in the second degree and armed criminal action in Jackson County, Missouri. On September 13, 2009, Brown allegedly got into an altercation with a male on a Kansas City street and shot him in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol after pushing him to the ground. The victim later died at a nearby hospital. A state arrest warrant was issued after the Kansas City Police investigation linked Brown to the crime. Once it appeared that Brown fled Missouri to New Jersey, investigators in Missouri requested the assistance of the FBI in locating and apprehending Brown.
The New Jersey investigation was conducted by Special Agents and detectives assigned to the FBI's South Jersey Violent Incident /Gang Task Force based out of the FBI’s Atlantic City Resident Agency in Northfield, New Jersey. The task force, comprised of agents from the FBI, Department of Labor, and detectives from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, and both the Atlantic City and Northfield Police Departments, developed information that Brown was staying at the Howard Johnson Motel, located at 1339 Pacific Avenue in Atlantic City. The Atlantic City Police Department obtained a Fugitive From Justice warrant which was instrumental in allowing the task force to arrest Brown this morning at the hotel. Brown was found in the hotel room (which was not rented in his name) and arrested without incident and lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending his extradition to Missouri. At the time of his arrest, Brown was with two individuals unrelated to the case. Law enforcement believes that Brown may have been in New Jersey since November, based on information developed from the investigation
“We have been on a remarkable winning streak so far this year,” said Cruise, referring to the capture of five fugitives since January 1, including one profiled on America’s Most Wanted this past November. “As I have said with each capture, the cooperation between law enforcement agencies doesn’t afford criminals the chance to escape justice, let alone carry on their unlawful activities. Once we share information and circle our wagons, the bad guys are done. I want to especially thank the Atlantic City Police Department for going the extra mile in this case.”
John J. Mooney, Chief of the Atlantic City Police Department added, “The Atlantic City Police Department is pleased to be involved in the apprehension of this fugitive. It is a fine example of teamwork that is most needed among law enforcement agencies. The arrest was made without any injuries to the police or public.”
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Brown will eventually be sent back to Missouri to face the original charges filed against him there.
