February 19, 2010 - BOSTON, MA—A Springfield man was convicted today in federal court of Possession with Intent to Distribute and Distribution of 5 grams or more of Crack Cocaine. United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Warren T. Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Boston Field Division, announced today that TOMMIE LEE COLLINS, age 36, of Springfield, pled guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor to one count of Possession with Intent to Distribute and Distribution of Cocaine Base.
At today’s plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that COLLINS sold 5 grams or more of crack cocaine on July 9, 2009 to a cooperating witness, in the Springfield area.
Judge Ponsor scheduled sentencing for May 10, 2010. COLLINS faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years and up to life in prison, to be followed by at least eight years of supervised release and a $4,000,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the FBI's Western Massachusetts Gang Task Force. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle L. Dineen Jerrett of Ortiz’s Springfield Branch Office.
