U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol Agents Seize Meth and Heroin at Checkpoint

Yuma, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents seized $784,220 worth of methamphetamine and heroin on August 24, at a Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 95 near Quartzsite.

Blythe Station agents referred a black SUV to secondary inspection following a positive canine alert. Upon further inspection, agents located 32 packages containing 43 pounds of methamphetamine and eight pounds of heroin. The drugs were hidden inside the vehicle’s gas tank. The narcotics, vehicle, and a U.S. citizen suspect, were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Checkpoints play a vital role in the Border Patrol's ability to restrict routes of egress from border areas. By impacting smugglers’ ability to transport contraband deeper into the United States, CBP Border Patrol agents have made significant progress toward establishing a secure and safe border environment while improving the quality of life for Arizona’s communities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control, and protection of our Nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
