Agents Stop $1.6 Million in Marijuana Smuggling Attempts

Edinburg, Texas - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Sector continued to thwart drug-smuggling attempts by confiscating more than a ton of marijuana in a pair of seizures Monday.

The largest seizure occurred when agents from the McAllen station found a green minivan parked just west of the main entrance to Anzalduas Park. When the agents approached the van, they could hear people talking in the nearby brush. The agents attempted to locate the source of the voices and saw seven people crossing into Mexico. Agents thoroughly searched the area and found more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana.

Another major seizure occurred near La Rosita, Texas, when agents from the Rio Grande City station saw several people carrying large bundles of marijuana north from the Rio Grande. When the group of smugglers saw the agents, they dropped their bundles and fled into the thick brush. The agents found more than 850 pounds of marijuana in the area.

The marijuana from the two seizures has a value of more than $1.6 million and will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

To report suspicious activity, call the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector’s toll-free telephone number at 800-863-9382.
