Two Days, Two FBI Fugitive Captures

January 26, 2010 - Acting Special Agent In Charge Kevin Cruise announced today the capture of Israel Washington, who was captured early this morning by agents of the FBI’s Newark Field Office, Detectives of the East Orange, New Jersey Police Department, and Deputy U.S. Marshals from the Newark Fugitive Investigations Unit. Washington was wanted by the East Orange Police Department in connection with a home invasion robbery that resulted in injuries to the victims as well as a burglary.

Law enforcement developed information that Washington was driving a black Mazda. That lead was traced to 8 Flynn Terrace in West Orange, New Jersey, where Washington was found hiding in the bathroom early this morning. Law enforcement also discovered a stolen car in the garage of that residence. It is unclear at this time if Washington was connected to that vehicle.

Washington, who had been wanted since June of 2009, had been featured prominently on Clear Channel digital outdoor billboards throughout Northern New Jersey, most recently this month. It is unclear at this time if the billboards contributed to Washington’s capture.

“This is the second fugitive capture within two days,” remarked Cruise. “Once again, the cooperation and communication between law enforcement and the public has brought another fugitive to justice. This is a win for everyone and a huge loss for Mr. Washington.”

East Orange Police Director Jose Cordero added, “The East Orange Police Department would like to thank the Newark offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals for their diligence and cooperation that led to the capture of Israel Washington, who was wanted by our agency for serious crimes. This is another example of collaboration between agencies that helps make New Jersey a safer place to live and work.”

Israel Washington will face state charges in Essex County. He is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Any further media inquiries on this matter should be referred to Sgt. Andrew Dielmo, East Orange Police Department, 973-266-5050.
