Austin Murder Suspects Captured in San Antonio

Suspects Facing Capital Murder Charges

San Antonio, TX – Jeffrey Mendez, 29, and Shawn Smith, 32 were arrested yesterday evening by members of the United States Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force (LSFTF) and the San Antonio Police Department’s Repeat Offender Program (ROP) Unit in San Antonio, TX. An arrest warrant was issued pursuant to an investigation by the Austin Police Department (APD), where it is alleged that Mendez and Smith committed capital murder.

Yesterday afternoon, members of the LSFTF initiated an investigation in locating and apprehending Mendez and Smith. Yesterday evening, through investigative efforts, extensive surveillance, and critical assistance from the SAPD ROP Unit, it was determined that Mendez was hiding out at a residence located in the 6300 block of HWY 90 on the west side of San Antonio and Smith was hiding out at a residence located in the 700 block of Cravens Avenue on the southeast side of San Antonio. Two teams of officers almost simultaneously entered both residences, identified themselves, made contact with Mendez and Smith, and took them into custody without incident.

On November 20, 2014, Mendez and Smith were allegedly involved in killing a man in an apartment located on the southeast side of Austin. Reports stated that Mendez and Smith allegedly forced entry into the apartment, initiated a physical altercation with the victim, and shot him with a handgun which resulted in his death. After a thorough investigation by APD Homicide detectives, arrest warrants were issued yesterday for Mendez and Smith for their connection in the murder.

Mendez and Smith are currently being held in custody at the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office awaiting extradition to Austin.

Robert R. Almonte, United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas, states, “Our task force officers and SAPD ROP Unit officers wasted no time tracking down these murder suspects once the warrants were signed and our collaborative efforts continue to show that fugitives in San Antonio will be hunted until they’re caught.”
