New York, NY – A fugitive wanted on outstanding state
charges after he fled Massachusetts, has been arrested today by a team of U.S.
Marshals and Task Force Officers from the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive
Task Force (NY/NJ RFTF) in the Southern District of New York.
Angel Acevedo, 39, was being sought on a state warrant
issued out of Springfield Massachusetts charging him with two counts of Rape of
a Child with Force. Acevedo’s victim, a twelve-year-old, subsequently became
pregnant as a result of the rape.
In the early morning hours, U.S. Marshals and Task Force
Officers from the NY/NJ RFTF orchestrated an operation to locate and apprehend
Acevedo after investigators determined he fled to New York City. The
investigation further revealed that Acevedo was using an address in East Harlem
where he was arrested. Acevedo is currently being held by the New York City
Department of Corrections pending removal to Massachusetts.
“Once it was determined that Acevedo fled to New York City,
it was imperative that the U.S. Marshals deploy every asset available in order
to help assist the city of Springfield and bring the suspect of this heinous
crime to justice,” said Michael Greco, United States Marshal for the Southern
District of New York. “This is another small example of how a collaborative
effort among law enforcement agencies can swiftly end a fugitive’s journey.”
Additional inquiries regarding Acevedo’s state charges can
be directed to Sergeant John Delaney of the Springfield Massachusetts Police
Department at: (413) 787-6313.
