United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Mission, South Dakota man charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter was sentenced on March 27, 2012 by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Shad Dillon, age 39, was sentenced to 40 months in custody, three years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund for each count.
Dillon was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 6, 2011 and pled guilty to the charge on January 4, 2012.
The convictions stem from an incident that took place on June 30, 2011 in Mission, South Dakota, when Dillon was driving a motor vehicle in excess of the posted 45 mph speed limit, had been drinking alcoholic beverages, and was under the influence of alcohol. Dillon was observed driving recklessly before he ran into the victim’s vehicle and killed two occupants of the victim’s car. Dillon was driving the car at a rate of approximately 60 mph at the time of the collision. Dillon, whose blood alcohol was determined to be 0.217, was also injured as a result of the crash.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher.
Dillon was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshals Service.
