Federal Grand Jury Indictment of a Previously Convicted Felon

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA — CLARENCE RAYMOND, age 25, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was charged today in a one–count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, on October 29, 2011, RAYMOND was in possession of a Sturm, Ruger & Co., Model P95DC, 9mm caliber pistol in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

RAYMOND was previously convicted on July 12, 2005, in the Criminal District Court for the Parish of Orleans for Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine (Crack); and on September 10, 2009, in the Criminal District Court for the Parish of Orleans for Possession of Cocaine (Crack), both felonies. As such, RAYMOND was prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm.

If convicted, RAYMOND faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a maximum fine of the greater of $250,000, and up to three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera of the Violent Crime Unit.
