KANSAS CITY, MO—Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for robbing a Commerce Bank branch in the Brookside area.
Robert E. Green, 44, of Kansas City, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to eight years in federal prison without parole.
On Jan. 11, 2011, Green was convicted after a bench trial of stealing $1,780 from the Commerce Bank at 6336 Brookside Plaza, Kansas City, Mo., on March 28, 2009.
Evidence during the trial indicated that Green entered the bank at approximately 9:04 a.m. on March 28, 2009, and handed a teller what appeared to be a business card. On the card was a hand-written demand note for $100, $50 and $20 bills. The teller placed money from her teller drawer on the counter. Green took the money and left the bank through the front door.
Police officers who responded to the bank robbery received information that the robbery suspect was in the area of 65th Street and Wyandotte. An officer saw Green walking in that vicinity and contacted him. Green was arrested on two outstanding traffic warrants. During a search, the officer found $1,780 in Green’s right front pants pocket.
