Tucson, Ariz. – In two separate events over the weekend, Border Patrol agents working in the western corridor of the Tucson Sector’s area of responsibility seized more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana with a combined value of $1.2 million.
Friday morning, Casa Grande agents stopped a pickup truck and discovered more than 600 small packages of marijuana in several hidden compartments. The combined weight of the packages was 985 pounds.
Agents assigned to the Ajo Station’s All-Terrain Vehicle unit, along with a Border Patrol canine team, discovered 20 bundles of marijuana abandoned Sunday morning. The total weight of the contraband was 594 pounds.
“Specialty units, such as ATV and canine teams, are effective at locating and intercepting contraband,” stated Assistant Chief Patrol Agent Raleigh Leonard. “Border Patrol agents remain dedicated to protecting our borders and preventing illegal drugs from reaching our communities.”
From Oct. 1, 2009, to May 31, 2010, the Tucson Sector Border Patrol seized more than 712,000 pounds of marijuana exceeding $569 million in value.
