Monroe County Man Sentenced to Prison for Bank Fraud

June 18, 2010 - Dennis C. Pfannenschmidt, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced that a Tobyhanna man was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for bank fraud by Senior U.S. District Court Judge William J. Nealon.

Lavan Blair, age 29, previously admitted to participating in a scheme with others to access and unlawfully obtain more than $66,000 from accounts in a New Jersey bank.

Pfannenschmidt stated that the offense occurred during 2008 and early 2009. Christine Fahmy, who recently pleaded guilty to involvement in the scheme, admitted to accessing 12 customer account profiles from a New Jersey bank and selling them to Blair and co-defendant Jonnell Gantt in Monroe County. As part of the scheme, Blair and Gantt used the customer profile information to have false identification documents made and used to access the accounts to obtain the money. Gantt was sentenced yesterday to serve 18 months in prison for his role in the scheme by Judge Nealon. Fahmy is awaiting sentencing.

Blair was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 7, 2009, as a result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Hackettstown, New Jersey, Police.

Judge Nealon also ordered Blair to serve four years on supervised release following his prison sentence. Blair must pay his share of $66,200 in restitution and pay a special assessment of $100.

Pfannenschmidt noted that the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
