Williamsport Men Indicted for Conspiracy to Counterfeit Federal Reserve Notes

United States Attorney Dennis C. Pfannenschmidt today announced the unsealing of a four-count indictment returned against WILBERT McLEAN and SAMUEL MONTGOMERY. The indictment, returned by the federal grand jury in Williamsport on June 10, 2010, charges McLean and Montgomery with conspiracy to counterfeit Federal Reserve Notes and three additional counts of passing and uttering counterfeit Federal Reserve Notes in Williamsport. According to the charges contained in the indictment, from January 2009 through May 2010, the defendants conspired to produced counterfeited $10, $20, $50, and $100 notes, and they made, forged, and passed between $150,000 and $200,000 worth of counterfeited Federal Reserve Notes.

MONTGOMERY, age 45, and McLEAN, age 28, are both from Williamsport. If convicted of all the offenses charged against each of them, MONTGOMERY faces a maximum imprisonment term of 25 years and a maximum fine of $500,000, and McLEAN faces a maximum imprisonment term of 65 years and a maximum fine of $1 million.

Mr. Pfannenschmidt stated that the case was investigated by the Williamsport Bureau of Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Secret Service and that prosecution of this matter has been assigned to Assistant United States Attorney George J. Rocktashel.
