Fridley Man Arrested for Bank Robbery

June 1, 2010 - Ralph S. Boelter, Special Agent in Charge of the Minneapolis FBI office, today, announced the federal arrest of Joe Nathan Michael, age 47, of Fridley, Minnesota. On Thursday, May 27, 2010, at approximately 2:20 p.m., the TCF Bank, located in Cub Foods at 250 57th Avenue NE, Fridley, Minnesota, was robbed by a lone individual who handed the victim teller a note demanding cash, verbally demanded money while threatening having a gun, then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Following the robbery, responding Fridley Police Department officers were provided with a physical description of the robber from police dispatch. As officers arrived, they noticed an individual matching the description of the robber standing near a bus stop at 57th and University Avenue. The individual, later identified as Michael, was initially not compliant with police demands to remove his hands from his pockets, but he was taken into custody after a brief struggle. A subsequent search of Michael revealed a large amount of cash.

On Friday, May 28, 2010, a federal criminal complaint was filed in United States District Court, District of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota, charging Joe Nathan Michael with one count of bank robbery for the alleged May 27, 2010, robbery of the TCF Bank, located in Cub Foods at 250 57th Avenue NE, Fridley, Minnesota. Also on Friday, Michael made his Initial Appearance in United States District Court, St. Paul, Minnesota where he was ordered detained pending a detention hearing on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in St Paul.

This investigation is a joint effort by the Fridley Police Department and the FBI. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota is prosecuting this case.

The charges in a federal criminal complaint are merely an accusation and defendants are presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
