United States Charges Waterbury, Connecticut Man with Robbing Putnam County Savings Bank

May 13, 2010 - PREET BHARARA, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York; GEORGE VENIZELOS, the Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”); and DONALD B. SMITH, the Sheriff of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department (“PCSD”), announced the arrest yesterday of DENNIS WILSON on charges of robbing the Putnam County Savings Bank on Route 6 in Brewster, New York.

According to the Complaint unsealed yesterday in White Plains federal court:

On September 9, 2009, WILSON entered the Putnam County Savings Bank on Route 6 in Brewster, brandished what appeared to be a black handgun and robbed the bank. He stole approximately $26,000.

PCSD investigators later recovered a BB gun that appeared to match a witness’s description of the gun used during the robbery and a clothing tag that was traced to a shirt which matched the witness’s description of the shirt worn by the robber. Approximately two days before the robbery, WILSON’s debit card was used at a Waterbury area Walmart store to purchase a shirt bearing the same bar code number as the clothing tag and a BB gun with the same manufacturer and model number as the BB gun found by the PCSD.

WILSON, of Waterbury, Connecticut, was charged with one count of armed bank robbery. That charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.

WILSON was presented on the charge before United States Magistrate Judge PAUL E. DAVISON and held without bail pending a detention hearing before Judge DAVISON at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2010.

Mr. BHARARA praised the outstanding investigative work of the FBI, the PCSD and the Waterbury Police Department.

This case is being handled by the Office’s White Plains Division. Assistant United States Attorney DOUGLAS B. BLOOM is in charge of the prosecution.

The charges contained in the Complaint are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
