East Tennessee Men Indicted for Armed Bank Robbery

MORRISTOWN, TN—A federal grand jury in Greeneville returned a two-count indictment on April 13, 2010, against Joseph Smallwood, 30, of Speedwell, Tennessee and Dale Walker Johnson, 35, of Russellville, Tennessee for armed bank robbery of the Consumer Credit Union in Morristown, Tennessee, and use of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Both defendants will appear in U.S. District Court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dennis H. Inman today at 3:00 p.m. for an initial appearance and arraignment. If convicted, Joseph Smallwood and Dale Walker Johnson both face a minimum of seven years up to life in prison, a maximum $25,000 fine, a maximum of five years of supervised release, and restitution.

This indictment is the result of an investigation by the Morristown Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert M. Reeves will represent the United States.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment constitutes only charges and that every person is presumed innocent until their guilt has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
