San Ysidro Port of Entry CBP Officers Apprehend Homicide Suspect with Million Dollar Warrant

April 20, 2010 - San Diego - The U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers assigned to the San Ysidro port of entry yesterday morning apprehended a man wanted for a homicide with bail set at $1,000,000.

At approximately 9:16 a.m., 18-year-old Jesus Melgarejo Jr., a U. S. citizen, was the passenger in a 2009 Scion driven by a 19 year-old female U. S. citizen. Melgarejo and the female driver applied for entry into the U. S. by presenting valid California birth certificates and driver licenses.

When the officer checked their names against law enforcement databases, he was alerted that Melgarejo was wanted in connection with the March 8, shooting death of an 18-year-old man in Fresno County, Calif.

After the warrant was verified with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, Melgarejo was arrested, transported and booked into the San Diego County Jail to await extradition to Fresno County.

The female and vehicle were released from CBP custody.
