April 21, 2010 - Niagara Falls, NY – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the apprehension of a U.S. citizen wanted in Texas for felony counts of Failure to Appear for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child.
On April 20, 2010, CBP Officers at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing in Niagara Falls, New York, received notification from Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that Jose Privado, a 51 year-old U.S. citizen born in El Salvador, was being deported from Canada to the United States.
Privado fled to Canada on December 17, 2009, in order to avoid criminal prosecution. The U.S. Marshals Service received information that he may be living in the Toronto area and coordinated with Canadian authorities to locate him. Privado was arrested on April 7, in Toronto, Ontario at a friend’s residence.
Upon Privado’s return, CBP Officers performed record checks and verified that he was the subject of an active arrest warrant out of Texas for Failure to Appear. Before his disappearance, Privado was indicted on felony counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child.
Privado was arrested by CBP Officers and turned over to the custody of the Niagara Falls Police Department pending extradition to Texas.
“CBP continues to maintain an integral role with various U.S. and Canadian law enforcement agencies when coordinating the return of fugitives from justice,” stated James T. Engleman, CBP Director of Field Operations in Buffalo, NY.
