Chicago Man Charged in Bank Robbery

A criminal complaint was filed today charging Armon Watson, 35, of Chicago, with bank robbery in connection with yesterday’s robbery at North Community Bank, 800 N. State St., Chicago. Watson was arrested a short time later by Chicago police officers on the platform of the Chicago Avenue station of the CTA Red Line. Watson appeared today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan in Federal Court and waived his right to detention and preliminary hearings. He will remain in federal custody without bond pending further proceedings.

Bank robbery carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A complaint contains only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The bank robbery is being investigated by the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The government is being represented in court by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennie Levin.
