New Orleans Man Pleads Guilty to Violation of the Federal Gun Control Act


NEW ORLEANS—Aaron E. McMillan, age 36, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, entered a plea of guilty in federal court to a felony involving a violation of the Federal Gun Control Act, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

McMillan pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance to the unlawful possessing of a firearm after previously being convicted of a felony. The federal gun violation carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of incarceration and a $250,000 fine.

According to documents filed in federal court today, on April 15, 2010, members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Violent Crime Task Force Unit (NOVCTF) executed a state search warrant for McMillan’s residence after a vehicle was abandoned at a murder scene in the 3400 block of Almonaster Street in New Orleans on April 12, 2010. The abandoned car’s registration listed 1630 Caton Street, which is McMillan’s residence. During the execution of the search warrant, federal agents and members of the New Orleans Police Violent Crime Task Force found 15-live rounds of Winchester, .9mm Luger Jacketed Hollow Point bullets in McMillan’s closet. By law, McMillan was prohibited from possessing firearms and live ammunition because he had previously pleaded guilty to simple burglary and possession of stolen property on April 29, 1997 in Jefferson Parish Criminal District Court. In addition, on September 23, 2008, McMillan pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of a firearm in U.S. District Court in New Orleans.

District Court Judge Vance has set McMillan’S sentencing for August 22, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. This case was investigated by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with the New Orleans Police Violent Crime Task Force Unit. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Abe McGull of the U.S. Attorney’s Violent Crime Unit.
