While UAS devices have been beneficial in assisting law
enforcement in a number of ways, they’ve also raised concerns within the
community about the possibility of police violating privacy rights through
aerial surveillance.
In 2015, public safety stakeholders and aviation experts
convened with the goal to produce a blueprint for how law enforcement agencies
can use unmanned aircraft systems most effectively, fairly, and transparently.
One of the key recommendations from the meeting was that to encourage acceptance
of a UAS program, the community should be engaged early in the planning and
implementation process.
