Navajo Woman Arraigned on Federal Second-Degree Murder Charge

ALBUQUERQUE—This morning in federal court in Albuquerque, Pauline Yazzie, 39, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation who resides in Sanostee, New Mexico, was arraigned on an indictment charging her with second-degree murder. If convicted, Yazzie faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Yazzie entered a not guilty plea during this morning’s proceedings, and is temporarily in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for July 20, 2011.

United States Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales said that Yazzie is charged with killing Jasper Barber by stabbing him with a knife on December 2, 2009 in a residence on the Navajo Indian Reservation.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Roberto D. Ortega.
