Madison, Wis. — John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Kiwanta Ali, 21, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 13 years in prison, for committing an armed robbery of the Speedway gas station, 4902 Verona Road, Madison, in December 2010. Ali pleaded guilty to the robbery, and brandishing a shotgun in furtherance of the robbery, on May 22, 2011.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on December 6, 2010, Ali was dropped off at the Speedway by co–defendant Peter Zimmer and an unindicted co–conspirator. Ali was captured on video pointing a shotgun at the clerk. The clerk told police that Ali racked the shotgun, demanded money, and said he would shoot the clerk if the clerk did not turn over money. The clerk complied with Ali’s demands and Ali left the store with $123 and a couple packs of cigarettes. Ali confessed to his role in the offense, as well as his role in seven additional armed robberies, which Judge Conley took into account for purposes of sentencing.
Co–defendant Zimmer entered a guilty plea to the armed robbery of the Speedway and his sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 8, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. The charges against Ali were the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison and Fitchburg Police Departments, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
