About the briefing:

In 2010, the National Institute of Justice initiated a research project to examine trends in hate crimes against immigrants and Hispanic-Americans in response to a legislative mandate.  Drs. McDevitt, Shively, and Subramanian will present analyses of existing national data and data from four states- California, Texas, New Jersey and Michigan - to determine if there has been an increase in reports of hate crimes against any of the groups identified in the legislation.  The researchers will provide information on how the states were selected and how datasets were selected (or eliminated) for inclusion in the analyses.  The presenters will also provide an overview of the main findings regarding trends as well as plans for the second phase of the project, which will examine potential explanations for the trends.
