United States Attorney John E. Murphy announced that in El Paso today, 34-year-old William Trinity Mendoza was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for writing a series of bad checks while impersonating a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent.
In addition, United States District Judge Philip Martinez ordered that Mendoza pay $2,417.59 in restitution and be placed under supervised release for a period of one year after completing his prison term.
According to court records, between August 12, 2010 and September 13, 2010, Mendoza wrote a series of fraudulent checks at several businesses in El Paso and Anthony, Texas, for products and services totaling over $2,400. During these transactions, Mendoza, wearing clothing items including a black baseball cap and windbreaker jacket emblazoned with “FBI," claimed to business employees that he was an FBI agent.
