Special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation responded overnight to the Miami International Airport to an incident involving a suspicious item found in the luggage of a U.S. citizen. Today, results of lab tests on the item were returned and found no evidence of any dangerous materials.
This individual, who has been cooperative with law enforcement from the onset, is no longer with investigators and was not charged with any crime. "The cooperation by this individual led to a quick resolution in this matter, and for that we are grateful," said Special Agent in Charge (SAC) John V. Gillies of the FBI's Miami Field Office.
The FBI and its law enforcement partners remind the general public that in the world we live in today, we must remain vigilant toward any and all potential security threats. Furthermore, the systems and protocols that have been established by local, state, and federal authorities to keep travelers safe proved to be successful in this particular situation. SAC Gillies also praised the efforts of the TSA employees who discovered the item, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and ICE and FBI agents.
