New York Sex Offender Apprehended in Dayton, Ohio

June 9, 2010 - Cathy J. Jones, Acting United States Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio announces the arrest of Joseph T. Cagle, a convicted sex offender, who fled New York and was found living in Dayton, Ohio. Cagle’s previous convictions include Sexual Misconduct in 2003 and Attempted Rape in 2006, convictions which required him to register as a sexual offender for the remainder of his life.

In September 2009, New York authorities learned that Cagle was no longer living at his registered address in New York and sought the assistance of the U.S. Marshals New York Regional Fugitive Task Force. The task force developed leads that Cagle had left New York and fled to Ohio. In January, the Dayton U.S. Marshals began conducting an investigation into Cagle’s whereabouts and determined that Cagle was staying at various homeless shelters and vacant houses in and around the Dayton area. On June 7, 2010, the U.S. Marshals obtained a federal warrant for Cagle’s arrest and set out to determine his exact location.

The U.S. Marshals in Dayton developed leads that Cagle was staying near the 1600 block of Leo Street and would frequent various public libraries in the Miami Valley. On June 8, 2010, Marshals and officers from the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) conducted surveillance at various locations and solicited the assistance of neighbors and concerned citizens. At approximately 1:00 p.m., Cagle showed up at a public library where he was arrested without incident. Cagle is being charged with violations of the Sexual Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), also known as the Adam Walsh Act, and faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison if convicted.
