BOSTON - A Springfield man was charged yesterday in federal
court in Worcester with threatening to murder a federal law enforcement
officer.
Carlos Maldonado, 30, was charged with threatening to murder
a federal law enforcement officer in retaliation for the federal officer’s
performance of his official duties. Maldonado is presently serving a 42-month
federal sentence, a compilation of a 30-month sentence as a result of his
conviction for cocaine distribution in 2016, and a consecutive 12-month
sentence for his violation of supervised release conditions related to a prior
conviction for distributing heroin in 2014.
If convicted on the charge of threatening a federal law enforcement
officer, Maldonado faces a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison,
three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Sentences are imposed
by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and
other statutory factors.
United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Joseph R.
Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
Boston Field Division, made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg A.
Friedholm of Lelling’s Worcester Branch Office is prosecuting the case.
The details contained in the indictment are allegations. The
defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a
reasonable doubt in a court of law.
