San Juan, PR - Tonight the U.S. Marshals Puerto Rico Violent
Offenders Task Force (PRVOTF) apprehended Efren Joel Sanchez-Peña, aka “Papa”.
Sanchez-Peña was sought after by federal authorities in the
District of Puerto Rico for drug conspiracy and money laundering. In September
of 2009 Sanchez-Peña along with 64 other defendants were indicted by a federal
grand jury, they were part of a powerful drug trafficking organization led by
Angel Ayala Vazquez aka “Angelo Millones”
For the past six years Sanchez-Peña has eluded authorities
by moving from different locations and maintaining a low profile, but tonight
his luck ran out when member of the PRVOTF were at a known food restaurant and
Sanchez-Peña walked in with other associates. Members of the PRVOTF positively
identified the fugitive and called for assistance. He was apprehended and taken
into custody without incidents.
Sanchez-Peña was featured as one of the top ten most wanted
violent offender of the U.S. Marshals Puerto Rico Violent Offenders Task Force.
Orlando Rivera, U.S. Marshal for the District of Puerto Rico
indicated that “The arrest of Efren Sanchez is a testament to the outstating
investigative work and perseverance of our deputies and agents and it shows the
commitment that you will be brought to justice, you can run, but you can’t
hide".
The Puerto Rico U.S. Marshals Violent Offenders Task Force
is comprised of investigators from the U.S. Marshals Service, the Puerto Rico
Police Department, the San Juan Municipal Police, the Department of
Corrections, Puerto Rico State Marshals and the State Internal Revenue Service.
