U.S. Marshals Arrest Homicide Suspect

Dayton, OH – This morning, at approximately 9:50 a.m., the U.S. Marshal’s Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) arrested Harry Steadman, age 48. On 1/12/2016, the New York State Division of Parole issued a warrant for Steadman after investigators named him as the primary suspect in a homicide that occurred on 1/11/2016. Ironically enough, Steadman was just recently released from prison where he served 25 years as a result of a previous homicide conviction.

Through the investigation, information was developed from members of the U.S. Marshals New York/ New Jersey Regional Task Force that Steadman was on a Greyhound Bus stopping in Dayton. Investigators believed Steadman fled the state to avoid law enforcement and was attempting to make his way to California. The Dayton U.S. Marshals Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) reacted quickly to the request for assistance and was able to locate and arrest Steadman at a Greyhound bus stop off of Shiloh Springs Road in Trotwood, OH. Steadman was transported to the Montgomery County Jail where he will remain until extradited back to New York.

U.S. Marshals SOFAST is a multi-jurisdictional task force comprised of the Dayton Police Department, Springfield Police Department, Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Grandview Hospital Police Department, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Adult Parole Authority, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Springboro Police Department and the Wright State University Police.

The U.S. Marshals Service is the nation’s primary fugitive hunting organization and captures more federal fugitives each year than all other law enforcement agencies combined.
