SPRINGFIELD, MO—Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Lamar, Missouri man was indicted by a federal grand jury today for robbing Great Southern Bank in Lamar.
Daniel Louis Slotterback, 52, of Lamar, was charged in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Springfield. Today’s indictment replaces a federal criminal complaint that was filed against Slotterback on Aug. 5, 2010.
Today’s indictment alleges that Slotterback robbed Great Southern Bank, 1011 Gulf St., Lamar, on Aug. 4, 2010.
According to an affidavit filed in support of the original criminal complaint, Slotterback entered the bank at about 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 4, 2010, and presented a demand note to a teller. The note stated, “Have a Gun Give Your 20-50-100 So No One Will Get Hurt” (sic). The teller gave Slotterback $1,430 from his drawer, the affidavit says, and Slotterback left the bank, leaving behind the demand note.
Bank employees recognized Slotterback, who had been in the bank on previous occasions, the affidavit says. One employee told investigators that Slotterback attempted to open an account at the bank in February 2010 and she had seen his driver’s license when she processed his application.
A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper stopped Slotterback’s vehicle about 15 minutes after the robbery on Highway 71 in Jasper County, and Slotterback was taken into custody. Law enforcement officers recovered $1,372 from Slotterback’s vehicle.
Phillips cautioned that the charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas C. Bunch. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Lamar, Mo., Police Department, the Barton County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
