TUCSON, Ariz. -
Yesterday, former United States Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Special Investigative
Agent (SIA) Alfonso Jose Mendez Jr., 54, of Tucson, Ariz., pleaded guilty to
perjury. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Feb. 20, 2019 before U.S.
District Judge James A. Soto.
The SIA for a BOP
facility is the individual responsible for supervising internal investigations
into staff and inmate misconduct, intelligence gathering, and security threat
analyses.
In his plea
agreement, Mendez, admitted that while employed as the BOP SIA, he perjured
himself during sworn oral testimony before an investigator for the Equal
Opportunity Commission.
Under his plea
agreement, Mendez faces up to 21 months in prison.
This case was
investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of
Justice-Office of Inspector General.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys, Rosaleen
O’Gara and Gordon E. Davenport III.
