Albuquerque, NM - The United States Marshals Service for the
District of New Mexico will be conducting Operation “Alpha and Omega,” within
New Mexico from May 15, 2017 – December 31, 2017. Operation Alpha and Omega
will partner the United States Marshals Service in NM with the New Mexico
Department of Corrections (NMCD) and local law enforcement agencies across the
state in conducting a statewide fugitive gang member operation. The two primary
sources that these felony warrants will come from are, the NMCD – Probation
Parole Security Threat Intelligence Unit and the District of New Mexico Federal
Probation Office. These warrants will include, but are not specifically limited
to; probation violators, parole retake warrants, and other gang-related
fugitives with felony warrants.
Currently, the state of New Mexico has approximately 100
active gangs, and 185 active gang members in fugitive status on either probation
or parole. During the Operation fugitives with gang ties will be targeted
across the state of New Mexico. Those gang ties include; verified gang member,
suspected gang member, known associates, and former gang members.
The New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) Security Threat
Intelligence Unit (STIU) has agreed to partner with the United States Marshals
Service, District of New Mexico, to specifically target violent
Probation/Parole fugitives with gang affiliations. Through this collaboration and
partnership a tremendous force-multiplier will be levied upon those with
violent criminal histories and gang related activities. “There is a direct
correlation between the presence of gang members in the community and level of
violence, crime, and the victimization of New Mexican’s. These fugitives are
truly the worst of the worst and sometimes difficult to apprehend while on the
run, but given the partnership forged during this operation law enforcement
officials hope to reduce the impact gang-related fugitives will have on our
citizens.” – United States Marshal, Conrad E. Candelaria
“This is an important public safety operation to apprehend
known gang members with arrest warrants to make our streets and communities
safe across New Mexico. This fugitive roundup will also tremendously help us in
reducing the number of probation and parole absconders who have gang
affiliations, and who have been willingly breaking the law. We have a
long-standing relationship with the United States Marshals Service and we’re
thankful once again for their cooperation in bringing these fugitives to
justice in the next several months.” - New Mexico Corrections Department
Cabinet Secretary David Jablonski.
