This media release is published on behalf of the FBI.
The FBI is seeking the Australian public’s help in identifying a potential victim in a United States unsolved missing person’s case.
Her name was Connie, and she is believed to have disappeared in New Mexico in about 1995, possibly a victim of David Parker Ray, who later received a 223-year prison term for kidnapping and torturing two other women.
The FBI is seeking the public’s help to identify Connie, whose last name is unknown, by trying to identify and locate an Australian man known only as ‘Mark’.
Mark wrote about meeting Connie and her friend Candy at an unspecified beach in the U.S. in February 1990, and his two-page letter was later found amongst Ray’s belongings at his residence in Elephant Butte, New Mexico after he was arrested.
The FBI, New Mexico State Police, and Albuquerque Police Department suspect Ray may have abducted up to 40 women from several U.S. states and may have killed an unknown number of them. No bodies have ever been found and Ray was never charged with murder.
Ray, who died in state prison in 2002, wrote in a journal that Connie was Caucasian, had been born around 1977, was about 160cm tall, and had long blonde hair and a birthmark on her chest. It is believed she was abducted in December 1995.
The letter from Mark to Connie, dated June 19, 1990 came from Sydney and may hold the key to her identity. Australian police enquiries to date have been unable to identify or locate Mark and the FBI now seeks help from the Australian community.
Mark provided the following advice about himself in the letter:
■He lived in London for about 12 months in 1988.
■He lived in Canada for about 18 months around 1989.■His address in June 1990 was Old South Head Rd, Bellevue Hill, NSW.
■He worked in Sydney around 1990 in a hospital for people with developmental disabilities, and for the AIDS Council of New South Wales.
■He spent the Queen’s Birthday in 1990 in Melbourne.
■He was studying for exams in social policy in June 1990.
■He jogged with Gay Frontrunners around June 1990.
■He lived in Paris, France for about six months.
In October 2011, the FBI, New Mexico State Police and Albuquerque Police Department received new information in the Ray case that led them to conduct two searches around Elephant Butte Lake in New Mexico. No remains were found but there are plans to continue searching in the future.
Photographs of items that may have belonged to some of Ray’s victims can be viewed at www.fbi.gov/news/news_blog/fbi-releases-images-in-david-parker-ray-case
Any member of the Australian community who may have information about ‘Mark’ should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
