Baltimore, Maryland — U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced David Allen Hughes, Jr., age 33, of Frederick, today to 15 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release, after he pleaded guilty today to possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Ava Cooper-Davis of the Drug Enforcement Administration - Washington Field Division; Special Agent in Charge Theresa R. Stoop of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Baltimore Field Division; Colonel Kim C. Dine, Chief of the Frederick Police Department and Frederick County State’s Attorney J. Charles Smith.
According to Hughes’ plea agreement, in October 2007, members of the Frederick Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration began an investigation of several individuals suspected of selling cocaine base in the Frederick, Maryland area, including the David Allen Hughes, Jr. On April 15 and May 7, 2008, a confidential informant (“CI”) placed a series of telephone calls to Hughes, during which the CI arranged to purchase crack cocaine from Hughes. During these calls, Hughes directed the CI to a location where he delivered to the CI 26.9 grams of crack cocaine for $1,200 on April 15 and 60.4 grams of crack cocaine for $2,200.
On June 5, 2008, investigators executed a search warrant at Hughes’s residence on Buell Drive in Frederick. Officers located Hughes in an upstairs bedroom and recovered from that room $3,406 in cash; six bags containing cocaine; and a Sig Sauer, model P226, 9mm caliber semi-automatic pistol. From the closet of another upstairs bedroom, officers recovered another plastic bag containing cocaine and a traffic citation issued to Hughes. From a kitchen cabinet, officers recovered two additional bags of cocaine and a digital scale.
