Additional Charges Against Former Philadelphia Police Officer


PHILADELPHIA—Jonathan Garcia, 23, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was charged today by superseding indictment with attempted Hobbs Act robbery and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. The original six-count indictment against Garcia, returned June 20, 2012, charged four counts of distribution of heroin and two counts of carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. The FBI arrested Garcia in June, and he is in custody pending trial.

According to the superseding indictment, Garcia, then a Philadelphia Police officer assigned to the 17th Police District, attempted to rob an individual he believed to be a pill dealer of $2,030 and prescription pain medication. Garcia did this while he was on active duty, by using his Philadelphia Police patrol car, uniform, service pistol, and handcuffs to illegally stop and arrest the individual and illegally search the individual’s vehicle.

The original indictment charges Garcia with selling heroin on four occasions and with carrying a firearm during two of the heroin transactions.

If convicted of all charges, Garcia faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a mandatory minimum sentence of 55 years’ imprisonment.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Philadelphia Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin R. Brenner.

An indictment or information is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Philadelphia Man Indicted on Robbery and Weapons Charges


Marcus Jones, 23, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was charged today by indictment with one count of robbery which interferes with interstate commerce and with one count of using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, announced United States Attorney Zane David Memeger. The indictment alleges that on March 22, 2012, Jones committed a gunpoint robbery at Aya’s Pizza, located at 7144 Elmwood Avenue, Philadelphia.

If convicted, the defendant faces a total maximum sentence of life imprisonment, plus a mandatory minimum consecutive sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, five years of supervised release, and a $200 special assessment.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Philadelphia Police Department and is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney John S. Ghose.

Man Indicted on Drug and Gun Charges


Jonathan Garcia, 23, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was charged today by indictment with four counts of distribution of heroin and two counts of carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime, announced United States Attorney Zane David Memeger. The FBI arrested Garcia yesterday on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by a United States Magistrate Judge.

According to an affidavit attached to the arrest warrant, Garcia, a Philadelphia Police Officer assigned to the 17th Police District, sold bundles of heroin to a source cooperating with the FBI. The source was posing as a drug buyer. The affidavit details several incidents between May 2012 and June 5, 2012 where Garcia sold the FBI source bundles of heroin. Garcia was in uniform when he sold heroin to the source on May 16, 2012 and June 5, 2012, according to the affidavit.

If convicted of all charges, Garcia faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years’ imprisonment.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Philadelphia Police Department and is being investigated by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin R. Brenner.

Robbery of Philadelphia Federal Credit Union


The Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI are seeking the public’s assistance to identify and locate the subject responsible for the robbery of a Philadelphia Federal Credit Union branch located at 929 Snyder Avenue yesterday (June 19, 2012) morning. The same subject is believed to be responsible for the robbery of the Trumark Financial Credit Union on 1931 S. Broad Street on May 11, 2012.

At approximately 11:22 a.m., the subject entered the branch and presented a threatening demand note to a teller. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the subject fled the area of the bank on foot in an unknown direction.

The subject is described as a black male in his 30s and 5’9”-5’10” tall, with a dark complexion, a stocky build, and a full black beard. He was wearing a camouflaged fisherman’s cap, white T-shirt, and dark jeans.

This subject is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to call the Philadelphia Police Department or the FBI at 215-418-4000. There may be a reward for information leading to this subject’s capture, and tipsters can remain anonymous.

Robbery of a Bank of America Branch in Philadelphia


The Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI are seeking the public’s assistance to identify and locate the subject responsible for the robbery of the Bank of America branch located at 1600 N. Broad Street this morning. The same subject is believed to be responsible for the robbery of the United Bank of Philadelphia at 1501 N. Broad Street on June 8, 2012.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., the subject entered the branch and presented a threatening demand note to a teller. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the subject fled the area of the bank on foot in an unknown direction.

The subject is described as a black male in his 40s, 5’10” tall, 200 lbs., with a light complexion, unshaven, wearing eyeglasses, a white T-shirt, and a blue Nike baseball cap.

This subject is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to call the Philadelphia Police Department or the FBI at 215-418-4000. There may be a reward for information leading to this subject’s capture, and tipsters can remain anonymous.

Robbery of Citizens Bank Branch in Philadelphia


The Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI are seeking the public’s assistance to identify and locate the subject responsible for the robbery of the Citizens Bank branch located at 6324 Stenton Avenue yesterday afternoon.

At approximately 2:43 p.m., the subject entered the branch and presented a threatening demand note to a teller. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the subject fled the area of the bank on foot in an unknown direction.

The subject is described as a black male in his late 20s or early 30s, 5’9” to 5’11” tall, with a dark complexion, a stocky build, and a scruffy mustache and goatee. He was wearing a white v-neck T-shirt and a baseball cap.

This subject is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to call the Philadelphia Police Department or the FBI at 215-418-4000. There may be a reward for information leading to this subject’s capture, and tipsters can remain anonymous.
