DOD Schools to Honor Teachers, Nurses, Employees

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 1, 2014 – Department of Defense Education Activity schools and administrative offices around the world will honor teachers, nurses, and all employees with a series of special recognition observances May 4-10.

DODEA schools and administrative offices will participate in four recognition and celebration opportunities honoring support employees who contribute so much to the education, success and quality of life for military-connected students and their families around the world, officials said.

The schools will participate in the following observances:

-- Public Service Recognition Week, May 4-10. Each year, the president and Congress designate the first full week of May as Public Service Recognition Week in honor of the men and women who serve America in a military or civilian capacity.

-- Teacher Appreciation Week, May 5-9. During this during the National Parent Teacher Association-sponsored observance, DODEA honors all teachers in its 191 schools around the world.

-- National Teacher Day, May 6. DODEA schools will celebrate this National Education Association-sponsored observance with celebrations that offer parents, students and communities the opportunity to thank teachers for the hard work they do to make schools great for every child.

-- National School Nurse Day, May 7. DODEA schools will recognize school nurses through this National Association of School Nurses–sponsored celebration. Since 1972, National School Nurse Day has been set aside to recognize school nurses.
