Los Angeles, CA - In a recent announcement, Director Christopher Wray has appointed Joshua J. Murphy as the special agent in charge of the Mission Services Division at the Los Angeles Field Office. Mr. Murphy brings with him a wealth of experience, having most recently served as an inspector in the Inspection Division at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Having joined the FBI as a special agent in 2006, Mr. Murphy's career has been marked by significant achievements and notable assignments. He began his tenure in the New York Field Office, focusing on counterintelligence investigations related to the People's Republic of China. Recognized for his expertise, Mr. Murphy was promoted in 2012 to supervisory special agent in the Iran/Iraq Counterintelligence Unit of the Counterintelligence Division at FBI Headquarters. In this role, he oversaw the operations of multiple field offices, addressing counterintelligence threats posed by Iran and Iraq.
Continuing his impressive trajectory, Mr. Murphy assumed the position of detailee to the Central Intelligence Agency's Iran Operations Division in 2014, serving as the operational liaison between the FBI and the CIA. His efforts ensured seamless collaboration between the two agencies. In 2015, he advanced to the position of unit chief for the Middle East and Africa Counterintelligence Unit, overseeing counterintelligence matters originating from these regions across the country.
Transferring to the Cincinnati Field Office in 2016 as a supervisory special agent, Mr. Murphy held responsibility for counterintelligence affairs and served as the Counterintelligence Program Coordinator. His tenure in Cincinnati was highlighted by significant accomplishments, including the successful overseas arrest and extradition of a senior Chinese intelligence officer in 2018 and the overseas arrest of a senior Russian intelligence officer in 2019.
In recognition of his exceptional skills and leadership, Mr. Murphy was appointed assistant special agent in charge for the Seattle Field Office's Counterterrorism Branch in 2019, where he played a pivotal role in ensuring national security. He transitioned to the position of assistant special agent in charge of Seattle's National Security Branch in 2020. Notably, in 2021, he was promoted to inspector in the Inspection Division, where he led inspections of field offices and conducted internal reviews.
Before joining the FBI, Mr. Murphy served in both active and reserve duty as a non-commissioned officer and commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and the New York Army National Guard. He is a proud graduate of the University at Albany in New York.
