The Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science (LEADS) Programs are designed to increase the research capabilities of law enforcement officers and agencies by empowering law enforcement to integrate research into policies and practices. Those who are selected for these programs will have the opportunity to attend the 2021 International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference with all travel, accommodation, and per diem costs associated covered by NIJ, among other professional development benefits. Applications for all three programs are now open and are due by May 3, 2021. The Scholars Program advances evidence-based policing by supporting the development of research-minded, mid-career law enforcement officers. LEADS Scholars are pioneers in the evidence-based policing movement, and present and publish frequently about their research and findings. LEADS Scholar projects have included studying the effectiveness of automatic license plate readers, the impact of stress on officers, and many other issues. The Civilians program enables law enforcement civilians to partner with LEADS Scholars, Alumni, and Academics to use data-driven strategies and locally tailored research to advance their agency’s mission. Civilian roles may include crime analysts, law enforcement planners, project managers, legal analysts, or technology specialists. The Academics program has the goal of advancing practitioner-led research and promoting sustainable researcher/practitioner partnerships. LEADS Academics must have been awarded their doctorate during or since calendar year 2016, have experience working on at least one research project that involved both working directly with a law enforcement agency and using data provided by that agency or collecting original data during the project, and must be full-time members of the faculty of universities or colleges granting Bachelors or higher-level degrees.
