Ariana Fajardo Orshan, U.S. Attorney for the Southern
District of Florida, and George L. Piro, Special Agent in Charge, Federal
Bureau of Investigation, (FBI), Miami Field Office, announced that Dr. David
Edward Nowak, 42, of Delray Beach, Florida, was sentenced to prison on federal
child pornography charges.
Dr. Nowak previously pled guilty to receipt of child
pornography, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2252(a)(2),
and possession of child pornography, in violation of Title 18, United States
Code, Section 2252(a)(4)(B) (Case No. 19cr80049). On September 17, 2019, U.S. District Judge
Roy K. Altman sentenced Dr. Nowak to 9 years in prison, to be followed by 20
years of supervised release. Dr. Nowak
was also ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution to the victims.
According to court records, from 2015 through 2019, Nowak
accessed peer-to-peer networks to obtain images and videos of child
pornography. Those images and videos
included pre-pubescent children engaged in forced sexual acts.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a
nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual
exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led
by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and
Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and
local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who
exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
