About the Office: 

The mission of the United States Attorney's Office, District of Hawaii, is to investigate and prosecute federal crimes and defend the interests of the United States in civil litigation in a manner that is just and consistent with the priorities established by the Attorney General of the United States.

Job Description: 

The District of Hawaii is seeking applications from experienced attorneys for a vacancy in the Criminal Division. In the Criminal Division, Assistant United States Attorneys handle a wide variety of complex cases including drug trafficking, money-laundering, white collar crime, organized crime, computer-related crime, violent crime, and appellate litigation.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Type of Position: This is a permanent position. However, all initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14 month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Qualifications: 

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, and must currently be an active member of a state bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) in order to be considered. Proof of active bar membership is required. At least 1 year of post-J.D. legal experience is required. Qualifying legal experience may include work as an attorney, a judicial law clerk in either federal or state court and/or litigation experience in either the public or private sector.

You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants should possess superior oral and written communication skills, legal research skills, excellent analytical ability, good judgment, courtroom skills, appellate litigation experience, and a demonstrated capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. In addition, applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies.

AUSAs receive training by the U.S. Department of Justice and by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Salary: 
Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $66,662 to $172,400 which includes 19.56% locality pay.
Travel: 
Occasional travel both within and outside the district as necessary.
